Rosatom announced on June 2 that Rostechnadzor, the Russian regulator, has approved issuance of a construction licence for two units at the Kursk nuclear power plant, or Kursk II.

The reactors are to be of the new VVER-TOI design. Pre-construction work is already underway at the site and commissioning of unit 1 is scheduled for 2021-2022. About RUB694.3 million ($10.35 million) has been spent on the work to date, Rosatom said.

The existing Kursk site in western Russia hosts four operating 1000 MWe RBMK reactors.
