Rosatom enterprises offer a range of services based on the application of radiation technology. This includes radiological modification of material properties, sterilisation of medical instruments, materials and products, the radiation treatment of solid and radioactive waste, the extermination and sterilisation of noxious insects and pathogenic microorganisms, the decontamination of medical waste for disposal, and the purification of wastewater.

The water-cooled high-capacity ozonators are designed for the purification and disinfection of drinking water, municipal and industrial wastewater produced by the food industry, paper production, and fabric whitening, while the air-cooled low-capacity ozonators can be used for sterilisation, purification and disinfection of the air in buildings, as well as for dissipating smells, and ensuring the right conditions for the storage of grain and vegetables. One promising study is looking at a radiological water-treatment technique that could be considered as a practical element in a solution to the challenge of water treatment from surface sources (this is being conducted at both NIITFA, and TRINITI). The doses of radioactivity applied during this process do not leave any induced radioactivity on the irradiated materials.

The extermination of hazardous and municipal solid waste is another objective that could be solved through the application of special equipment based on radiation technology, such as plasma generators for waste pyrolysis (SNIIP).

One more field in which radiation technology is applied is in the modification of material properties. One example could be the irradiation of car tyres that enhances the wear resistance one hundred fold. The radiologically modified fluoroplastic used in the production of pumping equipment decreases its friction 1,000 times and increases its wear resistance 10,000 times.

Radiation technologies are an efficient tool for solving environmental issues. Technology exists for the disinfection of water containing malignant bacteria and the result that is achieved using radiation could not be obtained in any other way. Wastewater irradiation facilities enable the level of contamination in water used in industrial production to be reduced 100 fold. This same technology also allows water to be purified of its radioactive components and is an effective method of decreasing the volume of liquid radioactive waste requiring disposal. In addition to water purification there is another facility for the irradiation of smoke emitted from the chimneys of industrial enterprises, which allows the amount of harmful substances released into the atmosphere to be reduced 1,000 times.
