The State Corporation  Rosatom  and its organizations have adopted a responsible environmental policy. This policy is essentially built on the following principles: preservation of natural eco-systems as its top priority;   unconditional use of scientific   advances and assured environmental safety;  transparency  and public openness  of information about environmental effects of industrial activity.   The main regulatory document in this sphere is  Rosatom’s Unified industrial environmental policy.

A very important role in the implementation of this policy is played by planning. Every three years all leading nuclear organizations make   environmental policy implementation programs. These programs are summarized to  make up the Rosatom Integrated plan of  environmental policy implementation.

All business activities of nuclear power industries entirely comply with the rules and requirements of environmental legislation of the Russian Federation.   Observation of its provisions is an absolute must and a major aspect in the implementation of Rosatom’s environmental policy.

One of the main objectives of Rosatom’s environmental policy implementation is to cut down the amount of atmospheric releases and effluents, to minimize production and consumption waste, and first of all the waste of hazard classes I and II.   The Corporation systematically puts into operation advanced atmospheric air cleaning systems, commissions new water treatment plants for waste waters and rain discharges;  introduces water re-cycling systems.

Since 2014 Rosatom’s key organizations have been certified for their compliance with   ISO 14001 requirements with regular re-certification audits.

Starting from 2009 all leading organizations in Rosatom publish annual environmental safety reports. The reports   outline the progress in the implementation of the adopted corporate environmental policy, tell about measures in the area of production environmental control and monitoring, contain data on environmental impact of business activities   аnd inform about the interaction with federal or local authorities, non-governmental environmental organizations, scientific institutions and population.  These reports, that  are open for the public, are available at Rosatom web-site.

In 2012 nuclear power industries operated in a steady way without any accidents or incidents that could have negative environmental effects.  Man-caused environmental impact lessened compared with the previous year.  In 2014 environment protection costs were 33.24  bln rubles, which is 1.7 times more than in 2013.   The increase in aggregate environment protection spending can be referred to the growth of investments into environment protection and rational use of natural resources.
